Scholar digitizes his own library
Story here. In many countries, this would be personal use, a category we don't really have here. Fair use? (I too can't avoid the visceral shudder that comes from the destructiveness of the process, which is why I'm unlikely to take up my husband's suggestion that we do the same.)

Ugh! There are absolutely non-destructive ways of doing this, should you want to - he says in the comments he's destroying the books because he thinks it helps his fair use defense (!!!)
